Battle Energy is required in order to start any battle.  The Combat Energy  cost is shown on the battle button once you enter the screen:

The total battle points that you have can be seen above, at the top of the screen:

Battle Energy replenishes over time, or can be replenished faster with gems. Battle Energy potions can also be acquired as a means to refill it but mostly from the Shop:
